A tiny unique region inland from coastal La Rochelle. Cycle through the peaceful and picturesque countryside of rolling fields interlaced with a network of 12th century canals which are still in use as the traditional means of transport.  Local cuisine is influenced by dairy farming from the lush pastures, and the canals are a source of some of the regions gastronomic specialities.

Our holidaymakers tips:

Enjoy meals from the sea and rivers, roast eel in parsley and garlic sauce is delish!

Cycle by canals - flat and easy, and take the chance to paddle on the rivers too

Sample chevre - with hot, dry summers farmers raise goats for cheese

Note Le potager beside many houses, including a row of vines for their Haut Anjou wines

See many a golden Romanesque church on this pilgrims’ route to Compostella

Visit the zoo at Foret de Chize – on the forest walk see up to 600 uncaged animals

Cycle to La Rochelle on the coast, a pleasant diversion by the sea
